The Story of the musical “NINE’”

from an interview of Mario Fratti by
Paolo Di Vincenzo in the magazine “Centro” – October 2007

Q: We often read Mario Fratti’s “adaptation from the Italian”.  What does it mean?

A: Federico Fellini’s “8 ½” inspired my play “SIX PASSIONATE WOMEN” (life of F. Fellini).  I wrote the play  in 1974 in Italian.  Then I adapted it into English.
I then wrote the musical in English, of course, inventing a new plot: Mastroianni goes to Venice to shoot his messy film “Casanova”.  This work took seven years with Maury Yeston.

Q: Why did you choose the name Guido Contini for the protagonist?

A: I combined the names of Visconti and Fellini.  Yeston loved my choice and used that name in his songs.

Q: “Be Italian!”  That wonderful song sounds typically Fratti. Did you write it?

A: No. It is Maury Yeston’s. But it is interesting to tell young playwrights who
want to write musicals how collaboration works.  I wrote a funny, amusing
scene where SARAGHINA explains love and sex to eager young children. Maury
liked it but surprised me the next day with “Be Italian”.   He gave me a choice, diplomatically:  “Do we keep your scene or my song?”  The answer was obvious. We chose his great song.

Premio Fellini 2009
