How
the Past and the Present collide in a marriage.
(DORINE
is alone at home; she is watching television. We see DICK in a telephone
booth dialing a number; the telephone rings in DORINE's apartment.)
DORINE (Picking up the receiver) Hello?
DICK: Dorine?
DORINE: Yes ...
DICK: Are you alone? Can you talk?
DORINE: Who is it?
DICK: It's Dick.
DORINE: Dick who?
DICK: Dick Raffert ... Don't you remember me?
DORINE:
(After a brief pause) I'm sorry, no.
DICK:
Dick ... May 1982 ...
DORINE: I'm sorry but ... how an I supposed to renumber someone I
met in '82? And with a name like yours? I must have met at least ten...
DICK: Not like me, I hope, not intimately like me.
DORINE: Llisten,
I am very busy and can't-
DICK:
(Interrupting) I know you're pretending I'm sure you remember me ...
Dick, the man you loved with such passion and generosity ...
DORINE: (Skeptically, ironically) Me? Passion and generosity?
DICK: Do you want to deny it now? (etc. etc.)
